SAP from the cloud - T-Systems passes the magic mark of five million SAPS
Every second SAP system that T-Systems supports for its customers uses cloud computing. This puts the number of SAPS - operated in the ICT service provider's data centers and provided as required via secure data connections - at more than five million. SAPS stands for SAP Application Performance Standard and refers to the performance of SAP systems. One SAPS corresponds to around 60 dialog steps per hour. "Dynamic Services from T-Systems makes ICT available like power from a socket," said Olaf Heyden, Head of ICT Operations (Information and Communications Technology) at T-Systems. "Customers only pay for what they actually use, which reduces their costs by up to 30 percent – an argument that is turning the heads of increasing numbers of businesses." Smaller companies were the first to benefit, but ever more corporate customers are making use of the service. This now also includes, alongside parent company Deutsche Telekom, Philips, Shell and Linde. These companies no longer operate their SAP systems independently but, instead, call on storage capacity, bandwidth, processing power or application capacities as and when they need it from T-Systems' data centers. The special aspect of this model is that, by linking together servers in large pools, T-Systems can leverage their utilization to 80 percent. "Our Dynamic Services mean we need significantly less hardware for the same performance and thus less power than for dedicated hosting models, which require every customer to have independent computers and storage capacities," explained Mr. Heyden. And this benefits customers and the environment in equal measure.
